Sailing & Windsurfing

sailing

Sailing - an art, a science, and pure fun. Whether you're skipper or crew, your skills are in immediate demand. At Brown Ledge it is always possible to just go for a “sail" but for those who are-or wish to be-sailors there is rigorous instruction available. You can learn to rig your own boat, plot your own course respond to all weather, and race in intra-camp and inter-club regattas.

We are so very fortunate, especially from a sailing point of view, to be on Malletts Bay which is about a mile and a half in diameter. Most of our sailing and racing is done within sight of our sailing dock. One of the major boat clubs in the area is one "jog" back from us; training for their regattas is done with visible incentive.

Windsurfing has become a popular sport at Brown Ledge and is no longer the little sister to the sailing department.  At least one sailing senior staff member is hired for their windsurfing experience.  We also host a few windsurfing workshops with a local guru for our advanced windsurfers.   Again, our location allows for novices to learn while tethered to our sailing dock and offers advanced windsurfers the conditions to learn how to use a harness, footstraps and master waterstarts all within sight of our dock.

Our sailing fleet includes race equipped Vanguard Flying juniors, Lasers, a Laser II, a Flying Scot, a Spirit 23 and a variety of windsurfing equipment. Before doing any sailing with us, you must pass a safety swimming test. Our boats are equipped with approved and required equipment. One of our own power boats is at hand for patrol purposes. With this kind of set-up plus a full time teaching staff of dedicated sailors, Brown Ledge offers an excellent teaching venue.
